Wikipedia Donations Drive

by CMB

If you have visited wikipedia in the past few days you'll probably have noticed the current donation drive. They are asking for 1.5 million dollars to run the service for the next year. As of the writing of this post the current donations tally to 731 thousand dollars, a bit short of half way.

Each donation is recoreded in a continuously updated table (here), and every time somebody makes a donation the page is updated. I was just clicking through the table and reading the nice comments people were leaving about the importance of wikipedia when I found this one, from somebody called 'anonymous':

Maybe I'm poor, but anything helps. 2006-12-28 23:15:39 JPY 10 0.08

Translation: He donated 10 Japanese Yen, the equivalent of 8 cents. How mindfuckingly cool is that?

His donation just inspired me to stick a fiver in the pot despite having no income at the moment. Over the past year the wiki has become one of the staple tools I use when researching anything and it's nice to give a little back, even if it's not much. Cheers, anonymous Japanese dude, for making my cold, black heart beat just long enough to give some money away.

Anyway, I'm all out of Christmas spirit now so I can go back to being a grumpy bastard.
