Welcome to the "Blogosphere!"

by CMB

It's that time again, the Technorati quarterly "State of the Blogosphere" post. The overall feeling seems to be the same as ever, and makes for some really, really interesting reading (seriously go and read the site now) but I will summarise some of the interesting findings here:
  • There are about 57 million blogs
  • The number of blogs is still growing at a geometric rate, doubling every 236 days
  • 55% of the 57 million blogs are currently actively updated
  • About 100,000 new weblogs are created each day
  • this graph shows number of posts per hour in a bunch of different languages. It is clear that japanese and chinese are really localised, whereas spanish and english are global. I would really like to see this graph for all languages
  • Farsi has moved into the top 10 languages of the blogosphere, indicating that blogging continues to play a critical role in debates about the important issues of our times.

One thing I'm really interested in is seeing how this blog stacks up against those around the world (competitive? me?). This is probably my favourite graph:

clicky for readable version

There is quite a bit to decipher in here. Blogs have been split up into four rankings based on their 'authority' (defined as the number of other blogs that linked to them in the last six months). The first three bars represent the low authority (3-9 links) blogs, the next mid-authority (10-99), the next high-authority (100-499), and finally the elite of the blogging world, the 500+ links.

In each of the rankings there are three bars, representing (1) the average number of posts on the blog (2) the average age of the blog (3) the average post rate on the blog (posts per 30 days).

It is clear that the more successful blogs are those that are
  • Older
  • Updated frequently

I couldn't help but figure out exactly where this blog stands in the scheme of things. It is currently 223 days old and contains 190 posts, which gives us an average of 26 posts per 30 days. I also know that the authority of this blog is 20 (via Technorati). So can say that we are
  • Very young, younger than the average age of the lowest authority blogs
  • Of medium authority
  • More authoritative than other blogs our age
  • Posting at a higher rate than other blogs of our authority

These facts encapsulate how I expect this community to grow. We are incredibly young, but are already punching well above our weight. Hopefully we can continue in this way!
