The Wonder of Science

by CMB

Sometimes I find that the day to day business of 'doing science' is profoundly frustrating, and deeply infuriating ("What does that compiler error even mean?!?!?". "Why is the power spectrum that shape? OH GOD WHY. END ME NOW."). After getting caught up in my daily problems and worries it is very easy to lose sight of the big picture and the absolute sense of wonderment that science instills in me.

Then again at other times I see things like this video from BioVisions at Harvard.

And suddenly once again I'm completely entranced by nature. The video shows all the things that go on inside a single cell. I really love it because it is completely mindblowing and also I find it really satisfying that I don't understand a single thing that happens and can just content myself with marvelling at large numbers and wonderful images.

I'm sure that on the flip side there are molecular biologists that would love to see our presentations about the formation of all the structures in the universe, and would get exactly the same feeling of untainted joy that I get from their work.

Late edit: I also submitted that link to boingboing, who've picked up on it.

Even later edit: Following the comments on boingboing, I found out that the stuff that walks up and down the little tubes, dragging a big liquid sack, is called kinesin, and is very awesome. Just check out this video of kinesin walking
