Dear Bostik,

by CMB

This is a picture of some Bostik all purpose glue:

You may notice that on the tube, in big bold letters, it says that the glue is "all purpose". The phrase "all purpose" strongly suggests that the glue could be used for any and all purposes.

Now imagine a common household situation, you have two pieces of plastic you need to stick together (say a coke bottle and a disposable plastic cup), so you reach for your trusty Bostik all purpose glue. Well, guess what? The all purpose glue might MELT YOUR PRECIOUS PLASTIC ITEMS. Yes, it melted my hobowine brewing apparatus. This is a picture of the inside of the airlock-cup on the "Outrageous Orange" flavoured wine:

That big blister on the inside of the cup, it is full of tiny little cracks and when I got back from work the airlock water was everywhere! Thankfully the seal on each of the brewing pods was intact so the wine has survived, but the table was a bit damp.

I did a bit of detectiving and discovered that the glue is not actually suitable for polyolefins, which are (according to this link)

among the most widely used plastics today. They account for more than half of total plastics consumption in the developed world.

WELL THEN IT IS NOT ALL PURPOSE IS IT. The tagline on the front of the tube needs to be changed from "extra strong clear adhesive" to "extra strong clear plastic melter/adhesive". Were I not such a calm and rational person I would probably have sent a letter to the lying gluemongers by now.

In other hobowine news: The orange and apple wines are fermenting merrily away, the cranberry is off to a slow start but finally seems to be picking up some steam.
