Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii was a color photographer before his time, who undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire for Tsar Nicholas II between the years of 1909 and 1915. He was able to capture colour by taking three pictures of each scene, each with a different red, green or blue color filter. The images were displayed by use of three projectors and three slides for each photograph. Here are some nice examples:




We usually only see the past through distorted, monochrome images. Viewing these colour photographs brings everything closer closer to home and really underlines both how similar we are to the people of 100 years ago and how massively different our living conditions are.
