Blackface as Acceptable Family Entertainment

by CMB

In a beautiful twist of fate I was walking through town today and found the very same blackface morris dancers that I was telling everybody about in the pub last night. This time I managed to get a couple of snaps:

As proof that great minds think alike I happened to glance into the audience watching the dancers and saw our very own David RS also taking surreptitious photos of the dancers. David, if you got any better pictures than I did could you link them here please?

Having a laugh at the blackface dancers also reminded me of something I found a few months back, Japan's best blackface band,The Gosperats!

Here is a little quote from an interview with the Gosperats:

Q: "It's been a while since you guys put on blackface. How does it make you feel?"

A: "Strong. Like a light that's been turned on."

Q: "But back in the old days, you were the only guy who didn't put on make-up."

A: "Yeah. I was supposed to be the white guy."

(Cue laughter. Applause.)

I think it's important to note that the Gosperats are Japan's "best" blackface band so be very sure not to confuse them with Japan's many other blackfacers.

Blackfacetastic!
